Title: Music, Modernity and Mobility: Historiographical Strategies based on the ‘China-Europe-Japan Triangle’

Speaker: John Lam Chun-fai
Hong Kong-based researcher John Lam Chun-fai is undertaking a project generously funded by the Sumitomo Foundation. With an emphasis on comprehensive musicianship and intercultural dynamics between Europe and East Asia, his endeavours aim to contribute toward emergent approaches to non-linear historiography in music studies. Fellowships from Germany and Japan serve to support his post-doctoral research since 2021. Most recently, he visited the State Institute for Music Research (Berlin) and the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto).

Chair: Yuki Tanaka, Associate Professor, Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia and the Study Group of Beauty in East Asian Music

Abstract:
In the early decades of the twentieth century, German music conservatories and universities nurtured young talents from East Asia. What kinds of cultural exchanges took place in Berlin and Leipzig? In what ways did the East-Asian students interact with important figures in music and various academic fields? To what extent did those fields overlap with and transform each other? Against the backdrop of Hugo Riemann’s Musik-Lexikon (13 editions, 1882–2012) with an evolving entry on Chinese and Japanese music, this talk draws on diverse archival findings and presents some ideas about historiographical strategies based on the focal point: ‘China-Europe-Japan triangle’.
