Report

On the afternoon of Friday, July 7, 2023, ASEAN Secretary-General H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, who came to Japan to attend the ASEAN-Japan Special Justice Ministers Meeting, was invited to give a special lecture and dialogue with the students at the University of Tokyo. The event was sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia and co-sponsored by the Institute for Future Initiatives and Graduate School of Public Policy. Approximately 70 participants (primarily students) attended this event.
The event began with President Teruo Fujii's opening message (via video), followed by a lecture by Dr. Kao on "ASEAN-Japan Cooperation: the Next 50 Years.”

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, Dr. Kao acknowledged that ASEAN-Japan relations have contributed to regional integration, stability, and development over the past 50 years. Dr. Kao recommended that ASEAN and Japan cooperate over the next 50 years. Specifically, he mentioned exchanges among the younger generation, efforts toward regional stability and peace, including the disarmament of nuclear weapons, cooperation in climate change and natural disasters, and the establishment of an open and rule-based regional multilateral trading system.

A lively Q&A session with participating students followed the lecture. After closing remarks by Takahiro Nakajima, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, the event ended with a high note.
