【Lecturer Profiles】
Verne de la Peňa obtained his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawaii. His research areas include Benguet Kankana-ey, Tagalog, and Filipino hip-hop.
As a composer, he has written for various media, including chamber, choral, dance and theater. His most recent work is Putri Anak, a theater piece (premiered, Cultural Center of the Philippines, 2017) which fuses the Philippine Spanish colonial genre, komedya with Southeast Asian stylistic elements.
He is also the music director of Tugma (Tugtugang Musika Asyatika), a student ensemble specializing in Philippine and Asian music. Since 2011, he has been a producer and host of the weekly program in the university radio station titled Tunog at Tinig featuring Philippine music.
