【Abstract】
The History of Ming wrote that Tang Yin (唐寅), Zhu Yunming (祝允明), Wen Zhengming (文徴明) and Xu Zhenqing (徐禎卿) were called “The Four Scholars of Wuzhong” (呉中四才子) in the middle period of the Ming Dynasty. Through a thorough study on primary history materials, we find it not true. The title is actually created by Qian Qianyi (錢謙益), who tried to advocate his literary views by doing so. In folk tales the four scholars are Tang, Zhu, Wen and Zhou Wenbin (周文賓), mainly because Xu Zhenqing’s life experience is not familiar to ordinary people. Zhou Wenbin doesn’t represent Qiu Ying (仇英) or Shen Zhou (沈周). He is more likely to be a fictional character.
