Title: "Law and equality in the Middle East from a gender perspective: a post-2011 view"
Abstract:
Building on previous work on family law in the Middle East focusing on gender equality in law and court practice, the talk will address two topics: reformist and revolutionary trends in family law after 2011, and the place of women in the public arena following the epoch-making events of the Arab Spring. The lecture will build on three recent books published, or nearly completed, on Middle Eastern Law (OUP 2007, new edition 2018), Philosophy of Nonviolence (OUP 2015), and Saudi Law (The Normalization of Saudi law, in progress). The lecture will analyse retreats for gender equality in various Middle Eastern theaters, but will emphasize breakthroughs of an unprecedented nature for the better.
