The JSPS KAKENHI projects “‘Sunnis’ and ‘Shiʿis’: Historical Inquiries into Confessional Identities and Mutual Perceptions” (23H00674; PI: Kazuo Morimoto) and “The Transformation of Universal Histories and the Formation of the Traditional Image of the History of Iran in the Safavid Period” (25K04491; PI: Osamu Otsuka), together with the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia (Tobunken), the University of Tokyo, are pleased to co-host a lecture by Professor Seyed Saleh Pezhman (University of Tehran), entitled “Envisioning a Messianic Horizon: Ḥamūya’s Shīʿī-Inspired Eschatology and Its Impact on Kubrawī and Timurid Spirituality,” on Friday, September 25, 2026. This lecture, held as part of the Tobunken Seminar series, will take place in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation.

Lecture Abstract:
Saʿd al-Dīn Ḥamūya (d. 649/1251) was a towering Persian Sufi saint of the 7th/13th century, widely known for his enigmatic Sufi doctrine and his deep engagement with the occult sciences. Modern scholars have also credited Ḥamūya as a major medieval theorizer of the concept of the “Seal of Sainthood,” as well as the figure who infused certain Shīʿī ideas into what came to be known as the Kubrawī conception of Sufi walāya. One of the several loci in Ḥamūya’s thought where the idea of khatm (“sealing”) and his interest in Shīʿī ideas converge is his elaborate conception of the Mahdi, whom he refers to as the Yasʿā. This lecture aims to examine some of the Shīʿī-inspired aspects of Ḥamūya’s eschatology and to demonstrate how his ideas served as a driving factor in the gradual Sufi–Shīʿī convergence within the Kubrawī order, as well as how they inspired the rise of some of the messianic movements in the Timurid period.
About the Speaker:
Seyed Saleh Pezhman is an Assistant Professor of Islamic Intellectual History at the University of Tehran’s Faculty of Theology, where he teaches courses in Sufism, Shīʿism, and Islamic Codicology. He received his PhD in Islamic Studies from McGill University’s Institute of Islamic Studies in 2024, and his research focuses primarily on late-medieval and early modern Persian Sufism and its interrelations with the Shīʿī tradition. He also serves as Head of International Communications at the Malek National Museum and Library, and holds a senior researcher position at Iran’s National Library, where he works on Sufi and mystical codices.
