講演要旨:Caityas, as stupas are commonly known in the Nepalese tradition, have invited various attempts to map doctrine and cosmology onto the edifice. In this lecture, I examine how a ritual chronicle recording the renovation of the Svayambhū caitya of Kathmandu in the mid-eighteenth century offers competing interpretations of the series of thirteen rings (cakrāvalī) rising above the harmikā. It interprets this series in terms of the Mahāyāna path and in cosmological terms by equating the tiers with classes of deities. The talk examines how these two equations have been translated into ritual practice. I supplement the chronicle’s account by drawing on narrative sources, architectural drawings, and fieldwork documenting contemporary practice.
