講演要旨:The field of translation studies was initially slow to look beyond the Western experience, but this has changed in recent years, and for good reason. One simply cannot overlook the massive Buddhist translation project which unfolded in China over many centuries. One of the key figures in the development of that project and in the attempt to understand its challenges was Dao'an 道安 (312–385), whose writings, including his theory of wu shiben san buyi 五失本三不易, are regarded as foundational documents in the history of translation in China. Paradoxically, those very writings have frequently been poorly understood and inadequately translated, at least in Western languages. This lecture will attempt to revisit the relevant passages in Dao'an's work and reconsider them (somewhat experimentally) in the light of the current headlong rush into the field on the part of Dharmamitra, Claude, and other AI translation programmes.
