【第1回】GJS講演会「日本史から“普遍”を考える―“忘れ得ぬ他者”概念によるナショナリズム理解の試み」のご案内

【題名】：日本史から“普遍”を考える―“忘れ得ぬ他者”概念によるナショナリズム理解の試み
【要旨】：この概念は、本居宣長『古事記伝』の序文から抽出したものですが、ナショナリズムの性質と動態を歴史記憶の観点から説明するのに有用です。日本の経験から世界各地の経験を説明するモデルが創れる一例として紹介します。と同時に、その英語論文がどのようにしてできあがり、どんな運命を辿ったかの紹介も問題提起となるのではと考えます。

[Title]: Searching for "Universality" in Japanese History: Understanding Nationalism through the Concept of "Unforgettable Other"
[Abstract]: While extracted from Motoori Norinaga's Preface to Kojiki-den, the concept of "Unforgettable Other" (wasureenu tasha) is useful for explaining the nature and dynamics of nationalism on the level of historical memory. This talk introduces this concept as a case of creating a model to explain universal phenomenon from Japanese experience. I will also mention how my paper on nationalism was rejected by a journal to illustrate the difficulty when Japanese authors dare to publish their papers in academic journal of English speaking world.
