要旨Abstract：
In the dominant Jain reworking of the Sanskrit epic Rāmāyaṇa account, that by Vimalasūri and his successors, the Daṇḍaka forest is said to be named after a king who once lived there. In an account distinct from the one narrated in the Vālmīki-Rāmāyaṇa, Vimalasūri (ca. 5th c.) and Raviṣeṇa (7th c.) describe how King Daṇḍaka once threw a dead snake around the neck of an ascetic, in order to disturb the ascetic’s meditation, so that he would move away from the king’s hunting ground. When, after several days, the ascetic remained undisturbed, Daṇḍaka became a devout Jain and protector of ascetics. In his version of the Jain Rāmāyaṇa, the Apabhramsha poet Svayambhūdeva (9th-10th c.) deviates from his predecessors Vimalasūri and Raviṣeṇa, by narrating a much more elaborate story in which Daṇḍaka is presented as a Buddhist king who is ultimately converted to Jainism by the ascetic. In this paper, I will present an overview of some the specifically Buddhist traits Svayambhūdeva attributes to Daṇḍaka and discuss why the poet made this deliberate alteration to the narrative.
