要旨:

This lecture will present two case studies of the intersection between material culture and ritual practice in Buddhist monastic contexts at a range of sites in the western Deccan during the early medieval period. Emphasis will be placed on examining the evolution of Mahayana Buddhsim in concert with changing modes of patronage during the post-Gupta era. Both case-studies will include an extended analysis of paintings, sculpture as well as epigraphic evidence in order to comprehensively reconstruct the prevailing ritual culture at Buddhist monasteries of the western deccan region. Through offering innovative interpretations of long-misunderstood aspects of material culture at several rock-cut monasteries of the Western Deccan, it is hoped that new insights will be accessed in order to better understand this dynamic period of change in the history of Indian Buddhist monasticism.
