概要：Focusing on public protest dynamics in Thailand from 2005 to the present, this seminar examines the structural patterns of state violence and the state’s underlying security logic. The study analyzes state coercion through three interrelated analytical dimensions: political regime typology, policy frameworks governing mass mobilization, and the mindsets of both high-level decision-makers and frontline security personnel.
The findings indicate that the predominant patterns of state violence emerge from the dynamic interactions between state actors and political movements. Two primary factors dictate the deployment and intensity of state coercion: first, regime dynamics—specifically the alignment between the governments, the military, and the state security apparatus; and second, state perceptions of demonstrators. These perceptions are conditioned by the movement’s chosen tactics .
When social movements articulate demands that challenge foundational state ideologies, security forces systematically deploy coercion to preserve the established power structure. Ultimately, state violence in contemporary Thailand functions not only as a mechanism for physical crowd control, but also as a strategy to suppress and neutralize ideological dissent.
講演者紹介：
Dr. Prajak Kongkirati is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science, Thammasat University. He has previously served as Associate Dean for Research and Academic Services, Head of the Government Department, and Chair of the Southeast Asian Studies Center at the East Asian Institute, Thammasat University. He received the 2026 National Outstanding Researcher Award in Political Science from the National Research Council of Thailand.
Dr. Prajak’s research and publications focus on Thai politics, political conflict and violence, party and electoral dynamics, and democratization. His recent works include Thailand: Contestation, Polarization, and Democratic Regression (Cambridge University Press, 2024); “Neither Democratic Breakthrough nor Conservative Consolidation: Thailand’s 2026 General Election in a Contested Political Order,” Pacific Affairs, 99, no. 3, 2026: 487–498.
