東文研セミナー「Lecture Series on Chinese Muslims by Prof. Hille (EHESS)」が開催されました

The Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia hosted a two-part lecture series by Professor Marie-Paule Hille of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) on July 28, 2026. Professor Hille is spending one month at IASA as this year's visiting scholar from EHESS. IASA and EHESS regularly exchange academic staff under a longstanding cooperation agreement.
Both lectures were based on Professor Hille's research on Xidaotang (西道堂), a Chinese Muslim Sufi brotherhood headquartered in southern Gansu. The morning lecture examined Xidaotang's commercial activities, situating them within the longue durée of Gansu's highly trade-oriented society and emphasizing the religious and moral ethos that underpinned them as fairness-oriented, non-capitalist forms of economic activity.
The afternoon lecture focused on the hagiographical traditions surrounding a particular episode in the history of Xidaotang. Professor Hille explored how these traditions, as they evolved from oral to written forms and came to be represented in different ways by different narrators within the organization, can be understood as products of distinct dynamics among multiple sacred lineages within the brotherhood.
Held in a hybrid format combining in-person and online participation, both lectures each attracted approximately twenty participants from Japan and abroad.
