Chintamani: A Popular Motif in Ottoman Art

The Chintamani motif, which has three dots and striped design, is one of the significant motifs of the Ottoman court. This motif in the beginning emerged from Buddhist philosophy under the influence of ancient religion and customs but later was used by Turks who mixed it with animal skin patterns as a symbol of power. In the Ottoman period, this three dots and stripes design was named peleng and it was very popular as the representation of power and royalty in Ottoman Art. In time, the Chintamani motif lost its meaning of power and royalty and became just a decorative design. Today it is used with favor as one of the most popular traditional Turkish motifs.

奥村純代氏は同志社大学文学部文化史学科西洋文化史学卒業後、トルコ政府留学生としてマルマラ大学大学院で学び、2003年に同大学院トルコ民族学研究所トルコ美術史学にて博士号を取得されました。彼女の博士論文はThe Influence of Turkic Culture on Mamluk Carpets (Istanbul, 2007)として出版され、現存する全マムルーク朝絨毯のカタログとして学界への大きな貢献を果たしています。そのほか、絨毯、テキスタイル関連の論文執筆、学会発表を精力的に行っておられます。1998年から2006年まではトプカプ宮殿博物館テキスタイル部門でテキスタイル学芸員アシスタントとして研鑽を積み、2007年からTurkish Cultural Foundationでトルコ美術史専門家としてイスタンブルに勤務されており、現在まで日本およびトルコにおける多数の展覧会の企画および準備、図録編集を行ってこられました。今回の帰国に合わせ、オスマン朝時代のデザインに関する貴重なお話を拝聴できる機会を設けましたので、奮ってご参加くださいますよう、お誘い申し上げます。
