発表要旨:
Marshall Sahlins’s posthumously published book, The New Science of the Enchanted Universe. An Anthropology of Most of Humanity (2022) focuses on the notions of “metaperson” and “metapersonal power,” by which the great American anthropologist refers to all sorts of nonhuman beings endowed with “essential attributes of persons,” i.e., to “proper subjects with real agency.” In this talk, I intend to discuss the relevance of these and similar notions for investigating the many ways in which the early Buddhist communities dealt with spirit-deities in and around the monasteries. In doing so, I will draw on materials studied previously by Gregory Schopen and Robert DeCaroli. I will also discuss Sahlins’s theoretical presuppositions and historical framework in a more philosophical perspective.
