The Istanbul Timber Merchants’ Guild and Odunkapı in the Eighteenth Century: A Hub of Timber Distribution (Kazuma Iwata)
This paper reconceptualizes eighteenth-century Istanbul guilds (esnâf) by analyzing the timber merchants’ guild (keresteci esnâfı) as a spatially embedded organization. While Ottoman guilds have been studied primarily in terms of economic regulation or state–society relations, their configuration within urban space remains under-theorized. This paper argues that guild organization cannot be fully understood without reference to spatial concentration and urban anchoring. The case of the timber merchants’ guild shows that Odunkapı functioned not merely as a commercial district but as a nucleus of authority: a large proportion of merchants’ shops were located there, and guild wardens were disproportionately drawn from this area. At the same time, the guild exercised jurisdiction beyond the city walls and outside the Istanbul kazası, including Tophane and Üsküdar. This uneven spatial structure challenges the conventional model of horizontally organized guilds, suggesting instead that authority was grounded in control over key urban nodes.

çeki or araba ? Measuring Firewood Weights and Volumes (Ottoman Empire, 17th Century) (Olivier Bouquet)
Based on the principle that the best introduction to historical metrology consists of as accurate a knowledge as possible of a good at the time, the study focuses on one that has been little studied but was central to Ottoman life: firewood. It distinguishes between the units of weight and volume used, based on a cross-referencing of 17th-century accounting and legal sources concerning the capitals of Edirne and Istanbul. It establishes why the multiplicity of weights and capacities was linked to the requirements of intermodal transport. Beyond approaches focused on the inventory of measurement units, the search for synchronic equivalents in a context of great regional diversity, or the establishment of correspondences with the standardised metric system introduced in 1869, the study invites us to link metrology to a combined history of work, techniques and energies.
