概要：
How did Southeast Asian political actors engage with and reshape global ideological currents in the aftermath of World War II? This paper examines the Burma Communist Party’s encounter with Browderism—an American communist doctrine advocating class collaboration and post-war international cooperation—as a case of transnational ideological translation.
Circulating through wartime networks centered in Calcutta, Browderism offered Burmese communists a framework for envisioning independence within a peaceful, multilateral international order. Under the leadership of Thein Pe Myint, the CPB did not passively adopt this doctrine, but actively reworked it to align with local political conditions and post-colonial aspirations.
This engagement, however, proved both generative and destabilising. It exposed fractures within the CPB, strained its relationship with the AFPFL, and became untenable in the face of intensifying Cold War polarisation.
By situating the CPB within broader circuits of global intellectual exchange, this paper highlights the agency of Southeast Asian actors in shaping, rather than merely receiving, internationalist ideologies. It contributes to ongoing debates on transnational history, decolonisation, and the multiplicity of political futures imagined at the end of empire.
講演者紹介：
Dr. Ponpavi Sangsuradej specializes in postcolonial history with a focus on Myanmar and Southeast Asia. She is currently Lecturer in Southeast Asian History at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, SOAS, University of London. She holds a PhD in History from SOAS, where her dissertation, Contesting Visions: Negotiating a Post-Colonial Future and Political Ideologues in Post-WWII Burma, 1945–1948, examined ideological contestations, ethnic minority perspectives, and global post-war currents that shaped Burma’s independence negotiations. Her work highlights how contested memories of this period continue to inform contemporary conflicts in Myanmar.
Her current research explores federal democracy, post-war internationalism, and counter-histories in Southeast Asia. She is also expanding her research to regional themes such as labour migration and border conflicts in the wake of Myanmar’s 2021 military coup. Dr Sangsuradej actively engages with interdisciplinary debates on Asia-Pacific geopolitics and has contributed to institutions including the Cambridge Centre for Geopolitics, the LSE Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre, and the Southeast Asia Research Group (SEAREG).
