IJAS holds its first outreach workshop at Chulalongkorn University

Report

IJAS holds its first outreach workshop at Chulalongkorn University 29 th March 10:00 – 12:00.

Members of the International Journal of Asian Studies (IJAS) editorial team introduced thejournal at the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

The workshop was chaired by assistant professor Pattajit Tangsinmunkong with opening remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Political Science Prakorn Siriprakob. Professor Jin Sato articulated the vision and scope of the journal, associate professor Michihiro Ogawa provided an overview of contributors and readership, associate professor Shoko Watanabe outlined special issues and procedures, Dr Sam Bamkin spoke about book reviews, and associate professor Chris Gerteis (online) explained the criteria for acceptance of papers.
The presentations were followed by about 40 minutes of discussion. The diversity of participants, including junior and senior researchers from China, Singapore, Thailand and France, allowed for a wide-ranging discussion and lively exchange of ideas. Scholars at universities in many regions, including in Thailand, require publication in SCOPUS-indexed journals for the purposes of academic promotion. From this perspective, many questions focused on the length of time from submission to acceptance, and the finer criteria for acceptance or rejection. There was a strong desire to publish in English, alongsidepressure to produce publications.

Holding further workshops on-site would increase international awareness of IJAS and continue to represent Asian voices in English-language scholarship. There were about 15 participants on-site and about 25 online.
