International Workshop” 201812/18 Transnational Advocacy for Equality in the Muslim Family: An Example of the “Musawah” Movement”

You are cordially invited to the joint international workshop on transnational advocacy for equality in the Muslim family.

The contemporary Muslim family laws that regulate marriage, divorce, custody, and inheritance are often disadvantageous to women, partly because of the strong influences of classical Islamic law, with its conservative interpretations and applications. “Musawah” is a movement which began during 2009, and demands that equality be developed within the Muslim family. Women and men, including members of non-governmental organizations, activists, academics, legal experts, and politicians from all over the world are joining this movement.

In this workshop, the focus will be on the transnational movements towards equality in the Muslim family, including the “Musawah”. We will discuss difficulties that these movements are facing and the possibilities that they bring for the future.
