【Title】 Situating Xinjiang Studies

【Abstract】

This presentation probes the question of how to define and situate academic scholarship connected to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China.
What is the history of the discipline, how does it overlap with Chinese Studies and Central Asian Studies, and what are the strengths and weaknesses of identifying it as a unique area of study? Looking in particular at scholarship about Xinjiang from the United States and Japan, this talk aims to clarify the boundaries of the discipline and offer a series of proposals formoving the discipline forward.
