Title: Licklider\’s vision is nowdays…

Language :Japanese

Abstract :
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the first website in world history (by CERN, Geneva).

What we nowadays call the Internet as the infrastructure of the web was conceived after J.C.R.Licklider’s (1915-1990) vision of “a computer and human symbiosis,” coined fifty years ago. As a matter of fact, his concept seems to be close to realization.

In this lecture, I would like to discuss the nature of digital data in reference to Licklider’s conceptualization. Perhaps inevitably, Licklider still approached digital data in a rather materialistic way, i.e. similar to carbon copies or printed matter. In the 21st century, however, such view feels not only outdated, but also strikes as inappropriate for understanding the nature and applications of data, in their broad sense.

What would a contemporary definition look like?
