Local History in the Context of World / Global History: Case Studies in Cultural History

Following the academic agreement concluded last year by Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University and East Asian Program at Princeton University, the First Fudan, Princeton and Todai Conference was held as below.

Presentations will be done in English, Chinese and Japanese, and simultaneous interpretation in three languages will be offered.

The conference started by the introduction by Professor Haneda, Director of Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, and the greeting by President Hamada. In the first session, Director Haneda proposed new methods to understand world history, and Professor Ge insisted the importance of regional history (Chinese history), then Professor Garon emphasized the association between regional histories. Regarding these interrelating issues, enthusiastic arguments were made between speakers and audiences. In the following four sessions, speakers made presentations about the frames, methods and examples to comprehend the world, region and their histories, and stimulating discussion were made continuously. A total of about 200 audiences have participated the conference.

It was the first conference of the 3-year project between Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University and East Asian Program at Princeton University, which was also held to commemorate of 70th anniversary of the establishment of Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo. The next conference will be hosted by Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai in December 2012, whose theme is “East Asia in the World History: Focusing on Histories of Culture, Religion and Arts”.
