This project is designed to open the study of Persian literature to a critical analysis of the work of
previous scholars, non-native and native speakers who have studied Persian literature. The
research of various epochs, ancient and modern, and of geographical regions will be included.
There is no limitation to the concept of Persian literature; the “classical canon” may be included,
poetry or prose, as well asthe more marginal or even anonymousfigures and texts, women authors
and texts that fall outside “normative” religious affiliation. At the heart of the project lies the
concept of “orientalising” which borrows from the critique of Edward Said, and his 1978
publication Orientalism. This seminal work critiqued much Western scholarship on the Middle
East for foregrounding hegemonic discourses that belittled Islam and Middle Eastern cultures and
established forms of “superior” Western knowledge as normative, but it reality presented a
distorted image of Islam and Middle Eastern culture.
