About This Book
Philip J. IvanhoeとSungmoon Kimの編集になるこの本は、故ロバート・ニーリー・ベラーに捧げられたものだ。そのタイトルに明らかなように、ベラーのHabits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life（1985年、日本語訳は島薗進, 中村圭志共訳『心の習慣―― アメリカ個人主義のゆくえ』、みすず書房、1991年）を念頭に置くとともに、近年の中国での市民宗教（公民宗教）としての儒教という議論を参照したものである。2011年12月に、同名のシンポジウムを香港城市大学にて開催し、そこにはベラーも基調講演者として参加していた。晩年のベラーとの交友を得た貴重な機会であり、その後、2012年秋に東京に招聘するきっかけとなった。なお、ベラーの東京での講演をまとめたものに、ロバート・N・ベラー、島薗進、奥村隆編『宗教とグローバル市民社会――ロバート・ベラーとの対話』（岩波書店、2014年）があるので、是非参照されたい。
中島隆博はこの本の中で、”Contemporary Japanese Confucianism from a Genealogical Perspective”を担当しているが、この発表をした後のベラーの反応には忘れられないものがある。その詳細は、「倫理的なモダニティーは終わらず ロバート・N.・ベラー健在」、『UP』４７３（東京大学出版会、２０１２年３月）に記したので、ご関心のある方は御一読いただきたい。
