発表概要:
Are ethics back in fashion? Recent developments in Japan—where ethics will be taught as a formal school subject starting in 2018—and in other countries around the world suggests that interest in ethical values and practices is on the rise. This talk is a preliminary survey of how ethics as a branch of knowledge from the West was introduced to Japan and became a key part of Japanese nation-building agendas during the late 19th century. By tracking the transnational/transcultural journey of one of those textbooks known as *Chūgaku rinrisho*, it also explores the transformation of ethical theories and practices in China and Vietnam during this period.
