【要旨 / Abstract】
清末の中国では、日本僧侶の在中国布教権に慎重な姿勢と厳しい態度が取られていた。国際法の知識を用い、条約の規定によって、日本僧侶が中国で布教権を持たないという主張が行われた。光緒三十年（1904）から光緒三十四年（1908）まで、中国と日本は、布教権について激しい論争を展開したが、結局、清帝の退位（1912）まで、日本は中国に布教権を持たなかった。そして中国の地方政府は、日本僧侶が中国で布教権を持たないという条約に基づき、その管轄内で布教活動を阻止したのであった。
With past experiences, China took a cautious attitude over the Japanese monks’ missionary works in China and insisted that under the provisions of treaties Japanese monks did not have missionary rights in China. From 1904 to 1908, China and Japan had fierce debates on missionary affairs, especially on the rights of Japanese Buddhism in China. Until Qing Emperor abdicated (1912), Japan had not got rights of missionary works in China. Meanwhile, some Chinese local governments prevented Japanese monks missionary activities within their jurisdiction, on the basis of Japanese monks did not have missionary rights in China in accordance with treaties.
