東文研セミナー"Rewriting the National Past: Germany and Japan after World War II"
ベルリン自由大学フリードリッヒ・マイネッケ研究所から、ドイツ発のグローバル・ヒストリー研究を牽引されているセバスティアン・コンラッド教授をお招きし、教授の第一作であるThe Quest for the Lost Nation : Writing History in Germany and Japan in the American Century (Berkeley: California University Press 2010. German Original: 1999)をテーマに、ご講演いただきます。同書は、第二次大戦敗戦後のドイツと日本における史学史（1945～1960）を、冷戦期の時代背景の中に埋め込みつつ精緻に比較した前例のない研究として、欧米の学界で高い評価を享受してきました（ベルリン自由大学の最優秀の博士論文に贈られるエルンスト・ロイター賞を1999年に受賞）。戦後の日独比較と言えば、ドイツは過去との対決に積極的に取り組んだ一方、日本は逃避的姿勢をとり続けたといった論調でしばしば語られますが、同書はそうした図式を掘り崩し、「国民国家の喪失」を経験した両国の歴史学者の戦後の知的営みの中に、諸々の相違と併存した鮮やかな共通点を析出しています。講演は公開で事前申し込みは不要です。多数の方々のご参加をお待ちしています。
Prof. Dr. Sebastian Conrad of the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut, Freie Universität Berlin, one of the leading historians in Global History Studies in Germany, will be giving a lecture at the Tobunken-seminar on October 4th, 2012 (16:00 – 17:30). The theme of the seminar will draw on his first monograph, The Quest for the Lost Nation(University of California Press, 2010), which has been highly prized by European and American academics as a brilliant and unprecedented comparative study of historiographies in Germany and Japan of the early postwar period (1945 – 1960). By comparing the ways in which German and Japanese scholars struggled to confront their latest past and to reconstruct a national history after defeat in World War II, the book revealed striking common features among the many differences and specificities. Through its comparative and transnational perspective, the book has dismantled the conventional contrast between an active German confrontation with the Nazi past and an apparent Japanese hesitancy to face history. The lecture will be open for all and no registration is required.
