東文研セミナー「アジア研究再考（ジョン・ウッズ教授講演）／Rethinking Asian Studies (Lecture by Prof.John E. Woods)」が開催されました

シカゴ大学のジョン・ウッズ教授による講演、Rethinking Asian Studiesが5月9日夕刻に開催されました。
まずウッズ教授は、半世紀以上におよぶご自身の研究キャリアを、その時々のアメリカ合衆国におけるアジアに関する研究の全体的なあり方と関連づけながら振り返りました。
その上で、現在のアメリカで必要なのは、個別の外国語を操ることができる人材をプールしておくための、語学ベースで細分化されたアジアに対する研究ではなく、アジア大での交流やつながり、相互影響を考えるようなアジア研究を構築することであるという見解を述べられました。
そして、そのような広い視野から行うアジア研究を構築していくにあたって、そのような志向での研究が長年にわたり行われてきている東洋文化研究所や日本の関連研究者コミュニティとの協力に期待している旨を強調されました。
参加者はおよそ30名でした。なお、ウッズ教授の来日は日本学術振興会外国人招へい研究者事業（短期 S17002）の支援により可能になったものです。

"Rethinking Asian Studies"

Abstract:
This lecture will address the development of the concept of Asian studies in the United States since the 1950s and how that conception has changed in recent years. Prof. Woods’ approach to this topic is largely autobiographical since he was educated and has taught within the area studies paradigm for almost 50 years at the University of Chicago. It seems that now is an appropriate time to reconfigure received models and revise them in a broader and more comprehensive perspective.
The lecture is open to the public.

U-PARL (Uehiro Project for the Asian Research Library), UTokyo;
Network for Education and Research on Asia, UTokyo;
and the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies Japan Office.
This event also constitutes part of the UTokyo-UChicago Strategic Partnership program.
