2016 年1 月25 日、東洋文化研究所三階第一会議室において、東文研セミナー「The Religion, Asianism and the “Yellow Peril”: The Creation of Islam in Japan in the Early 20th Century/宗教・アジア主義・「黄禍」―20世紀初頭の日本におけるイスラームの創出」が開催された。

The seminar took place on January 25th in front of about 15 people. The presentation began with an outline of Abdürreşid İbrahim’s life, his journey to Japan in 1909 and his relationship with Japanese pan-Asianists. Abdürreşid İbrahim did not only co-found the first pan-Asianist society in Japan which was directed specifically towards Asian Muslims but also undertook the pilgrimage to Mecca in the company of a Japanese convert to Islam.

The next part of the presentation focused on the widespread myths around İbrahim’s journey, i. e. that even before 1909 he was in contact with Japanese pan-Asianists or military circles and had visited Japan before. Especially a report by the American military intelligence from World War II contributed to spreading such myths although no proof for any previous contacts exists.

The main part of the presentation explored the links between İbrahim’s self-portrayals in his travel accounts and what was written in the years before about the chances of Islam in Japan particularly in the Egyptian press. Debates in Egypt circulated around the question how to reassert the value of Islam in competition with Christianity and how Muslims could become capable of spreading Islam in non-Muslims countries. By actively taking up topics from these debates, İbrahim presented himself as a role model for other Muslims his own importance. At the same time, he took part in globally circulating discourses about Japan’s ambitions in Asia and promoted Islam as an important political tool in order to acquire influence in Asia. The presentation was commented on by Professor Komatsu Hisao of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Professor Komatsu’s comments and the subsequent general discussion turned around questions of Muslims’ perceptions of Japan, Japanese pan-Asianists’s goals and religious dimensions of the Russo-Japanese War.

【概要 / Abstract】
The journey of the Russian Muslim Abdürreşid İbrahim (1857-1944) to Japan in 1909 and his encounters with Japanese Asianists mark the inclusion of Islam into the vision of Asian unity under Japan´s leadership. However, circumstances and aims of İbrahim’s journey remain shrouded in some mystery. This presentation will point out the links between Abdürreşid İbrahim’s actions and self-portrayals and preceding speculations about the spread of Islam in Japan, which had received considerable attention in the years following the Russo-Japanese War.

After the Russo-Japanese War, the possibility of Islam in Japan was discussed in Muslim newspapers in two different ways. On the one hand this topic formed part of a religious reform discourse which strove to restore the value of Islam by enabling it to compete with Christianity. On the other hand, pan-Islamists argued the political relevance of Islam by offering their assistance to Japan in its expansion in Asia, actively playing into Western fears of the “yellow peril”. In the writings of Abdürreşid İbrahim both discussions are intertwined, thereby ensuring the attention of different publics and establishing a close connection between religion and politics in Japan’s engagement with Islam.
