貨幣の本質は、貨幣そのものにあるのではなく、貨幣を使用する人々の循環的なつながり、すなわち回路にこそある。そのつながりには、匿名的に流通する通貨を介する場合と、貨幣単位で記帳しながら指名的な債権債務をつらねた信用の連鎖の場合とがあるが、弾力性に富むが滞留しやすい前者と確定的だが伸縮性に欠ける後者は補完的に働いている。その組み合わせのあり方の世界史大の比較を、国際的かつ学際的な協同により行っている。
