【Report】
A Tobunken seminar “Changing Configuration of ‘Alid Piety in Indonesian Islam” by Michael Feener, Associate Professor at Asian Research Institute, National University of Singapore, was held on Thursday 1 March. He organized, in cooperation with Professor Haneda Masashi of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, a joint graduate conference, entitled “Secularization, Religion and the State” at NUS in January 2010.
It is thanks to this conference and mutual academic exchange thereafter that the seminar of Professor Feener was realized here. Professor Feener explained clearly, from a historical perspective, particular aspects of religious situation in contemporary Indonesia where the reverence for Ali and his descendents has been often misunderstood as Shiite belief.
