第8届 GJS主办学术研讨会(110届东文研・ASNET共同主办学术研讨会)
题目: Shinran’s Hope in the Age of Mappō
时间: 2015年1月12日(周四)17:00-18:00
地点: 东京大学东洋文化研究所1楼门厅
报告者: Rika Dunlap (Visiting Scholar, The University of Tokyo)
语言:英语
内容提要: Many contemporary discourses on hope emphasize the power of human action. In 2005, a group of social scientists at the University of Tokyo established Hope Studies (希望学), and they defined hope as “a wish for something to come true by action.”
However, hope also involves a positive sense of powerlessness that emerges from the limitation of human power. Shinran, the founder of Shin Buddhism, emphasizes that point, arguing instead that only the compassion of the Amida Buddha can save the sentient beings from suffering. Thus, Shinran’s teaching establishes that the faith in other-power (tariki 他力) is the only source of hope, rendering human action ineffective as a result. In this presentation, I will analyze the concept of other-power in Shinran’s teaching, particularly focusing on his comparison between self-power and other-power in the Kyōgyōshinshō.
