KANO Hiroyoshi, Professor

KANO Hiroyoshi is Professor of Southeast Asian economic studies. The main subject of his research is economic history and the rural economy of Indonesia. He received his B. A. (1970) from the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo, and got his Doctor of Economics degree (1990) also from the University of Tokyo. He started his academic career in 1971 as a Member of the Research Staff, Institute of Developing Economies (IDE). From 1976 to 1978 he stayed in Indonesia to conduct field research on the rural economy in Java. In 1980 he was appointed Associate Professor of the Institute of Oriental Culture and was promoted to Professor in 1991. He was Guest Researcher at the University of Amsterdam from 1986 to 1987 and was given a similar position at Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia from 1987 to 1988. Recently, he has stayed at Center for Japanese Studies, University of Indonesia as expert of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a year from Dec. 1999. He is also the coordinator of the ongoing IOC's Regular Research "Rethinking the Modern History of Southeast Asia".

Mizuno, ), Pagelaran: Anatomi Sosial Ekonomi Pelapisan Masyarakat Tani di Sebuah Desa Jawa Timur [Pagelaran: A Socio-economic Anatomy on Stratification of Peasant Society in an East Java Village] (Yogyakarta: Gadjah Mada University Press, 1990), The Rural Economy of Indonesia [インドネシア農村経済論] (Tokyo: Keiso Publisher, 1988), and "The Economic History of Javanese Rural Society: A Reinterpretation," Developing Economies 16-1 (1980): 3-22. He was awarded the Prize for Studies on Developing Countries by IDE in 1980, and the Asia Pacific Award by the Asian Affairs Research Council (together with the Mainichi Shinbun) in 1988.

From 1997, he has been involved in the joint-research project between the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, and the Center for Japanese Studies, University of Indonesia, as coordinator of the social study team on the urban-rural relationships in economic development.
