地域の研究と「地域研究」―東京大学におけるその誕生と今後の行方
The Study of Certain Areas or “Area Studies” at the University of Tokyo

【要旨 / Abstract】
「地域研究」という語が学術的な場面で用いられるようになって半世紀、「地域研究とは何か」という問いは明確な答えを得ないままに繰り返されてきた。本報告では、その原因の一つとして「地域の研究」と「地域研究」という二つの研究姿勢があることを指摘し、それぞれがどのように誕生し発展してきたのかを東京大学における文学部、東洋文化研究所、教養学部と総合文化研究科の成立を一つの事例として描き出す。その上で、「地域の研究」と「地域研究」の特徴や、二つの研究姿勢の今後のゆくえについても考えていく。

It has been more than half a century since the term area studies (地域研究 in Japanese) first appeared in academic spheres. Since then, discussions on the topic “what are area studies” have frequently occurred without reaching any consensus. This presentation seeks one of the reasons for this situation by indicating the existence of two opposing methodological stances existing among scholars in this field—that is, on the one hand, “studying certain areas” in combination with existing disciplines and, on the other hand, doing “Area Studies” as an independent, interdisciplinary, and innovative activity. Examples analyzed include the founding and development of the Faculty of Letters, The Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, College/Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Further, challenges faced as well as the prospects of the study are described.
