20世紀日本の多様な近世
The Multiple Faces of the Early Modern in 20th Century Japan

【要旨 / Abstract】
日本で「近世」というと江戸時代を連想する人が多いだろう。しかし、実は、日本には様々な近世がある。この「多様な近世」はどのようなものなのか。それはいつ始まりいつまで続き、どの場所で存在し、そしてどの場面で演じられたのか。本発表では、こうした問いについて考えてみる。まだ進行中のプロジェクトであり、その答えが見つかったわけではないが、インゲン豆と朝鮮総督府を手掛かりにし、２０世紀日本における近世の語り方について探ってみたい。

In a Japanese context, the “early modern”(kinsei) is strongly associated with the Edo period. Yet in fact there are manifold early modernities in Japan. But what exactly are they? When do they start and end, where are they located and how are they performed? These are the kinds of questions I would like to discuss in my talk. The project is still work in progress, so do not expect me to have all the answers, but I have a hunch that green beans and the General Government of colonial Korea might be worthwhile entry points into the fascinating world of 20th century early modernities.
