FORT

Fort, walls and gate

@This place was the capital of the Yadava Hindu Dynasty called Deogiri from the beginning of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century untill the rise to power of the Islam. After it became controlled by Muslims, a great city, Daulatabad, was formed surrounding the fort. It is clearly evident from various points in its form and style that the great fort of Daulatabad was constructed by the Hindu Yadava power. The details of the solid structure of this fort are well described in a book about existing forts and fortresses in South Asia written by Sidney Toy. The strategy for defense of having double walls to the gate and constructing further gates with trenches reflects its advanced conception and construction. The variously sized passages make complicated curves, and the solid structure of the walls with bastions and castellations, and a station for soldiers are well arranged around the entrance gate of the fort. These suggest its forerunning sense for protection very well. It should also be noted that the great fort of Daulatabad was constructed, fully utilizing the geographical features of grand and solid rocky hills in the Deccan plateau. (Matsuo Ara)@
