DAULATABAD
@In Daulatabad, the
great fort that represents the medieval South Asian fortress was
constructed on a rocky hill of Deccan Plateau. It made the best
use of geographic features. Even today, its imposing appearance
like a leviathan floating on the ocean looks amazing. As a result
of an expedition to the south by Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1327,
Daulatabad was made the second capital (along with Delhi). The
fact that many officials and residents in Delhi were forced to
move to this place by the sultan is widely known in South Asia.
As is the fact that this great walled town called "town of
prosperity" was abandoned by the same sultan during his
reign. (Matsuo Ara)

@The fort and walls
of Daulatabad will be explained later. First, I will
explain about Jama Masjid in the walled town. This mosque
was known as Jama Masjid of the town, and this fact can
be determined from the large front courtyard that still
exists today. This mosque is situated on the inner area
of the great double-walled city that is spread at the
east foot of the fort. East-north-east of the mosque,
there is a large reservoir and north-north-west of the
mosque, considerably distant from it, there is the high
tower of Chand Minar to be explained later. Judging from
this, one might safely assume that this area used to be
the centre of the great walled town of Daulatabad.(Matsuo

2.FORT `Fort, walls and gate@
![]() |
@This solidly
constructed great fort, walls, gate and other structures
are well explained by Sydney Toy. This building makes the
best use of the geographic features of this area. Its
idea to make a road to the palace complex at the top
further impregnable by constructing stairs and a tunnel
is amazing. Having been built by the rulers of Hindu
Kingdom of Yadava and taken over by a conqueror of
Tughluq Dynasty, this Deccan great fort is, as suggested
by Toy, "the most solid fort among all existing
medieval forts". From the point of view of its
arrangement and construction, it would be correct to say
that the fort and remains of the walled town have rare
historical importance. (Matsuo Ara) ¨Detailed Explanation ¨List of Photos |

@One of the earliest
Muslim buildings, Qutb Minar in Delhi, was built attached
to the Jama Masjid of the time, Quwwat al Islam Masjid.
However, this slender tall tower known as "Tower of
the Moon" is situated at a considerable distance
from Jama Masjid in Daulatabad. Like Qutb Minar in Delhi,
this minar is said to have been built near Jama Masjid to
commemorate a victory. (Matsuo Ara) ¨Detailed Explanation ¨Enlarged picture |
