ATALA MASJID/JAUNPUR

@

@The central pylon on the fasade wall with a majestic arch is a special feature of mosques remaining in Jaunpur. There is a convincing theory that it was built with influence from the Bagampur Masjid in Delhi. In various aspects such as the existance of niches, inclined walls, the form and structure of beams and pillars, etc., it shows similarities to mosques, tombs and other buildings constructed under the Sultan Muhammad Shah and Firoz Shah of the Tugluq Dynasty, in Delhi. It should be mentioned that this trend is also seen in other "Jaunpur Style" mosques which follow this mosque as a model, and will be introduced later. Also, it should be noted that there is an assumption that many Hindu and Muslim workmen from Delhi were involved in the construction of this mosque. However, the buildings in Jaunpur have not only the influence of Delhi but as can be seen in other regions, they follow a strong tradition of architecture and craft from the middle reaches of the Ganga river as well. It should not be forgotten that some elements are even superior to those in Delhi. In the case of the Atala Masjid, the unique features of Jaunpur building should be emphasized. Examples of these are the majestic pylon in the main prayer room, the three domes in different sizes, the structure and style of the back wall in the west side, mihrab and other decorations of the main prayer room, a space that seems to be a zanana upstairs, and two-tired corridors.(Matsuo Ara)
