Recruitment for Associate Professor (Academic Editor)
Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia (IASA) at the University of Tokyo is seeking to appoint an associate professor to promote global and international publication by the faculty members of the university for a period of five years starting on April 1, 2019.
The purpose of this appointment is to encourage international publication from leading publishers by members of the faculties of humanities and area studies in the University of Tokyo, and to raise the international profile of humanities and area studies. To this end, the IASA expects the associate professor to assist faculty members to produce qualified book proposals for English-language publishers, through activities such as organizing relevant seminars for faculty members. She or he will also act as a managing editor of the International Journal of Asian Studies managed by the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia and published by Cambridge University Press.
The IASA will give preference to the candidates who have good academic networks and strong connections with international publishing houses and experience of academic editing and/or the editing of academic journals. Professional editors with the Ph.D. are also welcome to apply.
Successful candidates shall have excellent English language editing skills and research interests in Asia. Proficiency in Japanese language is not required.
This call is for a fixed-term appointment for the period of April 1, 2019 through March 31, 2024. If the successful candidate is not able to assume the position on April 1, 2019, the date of assumption of the position may be negotiated. In any case, the term ends on March 31, 2024.
Qualifications: The applicant must possess the Ph.D. or its equivalent in humanities, area studies, or related disciplines.
Salary: Monthly salaries will be determined based upon the appointees’ academic background, careers and so on. There are seasonal bonuses twice a year. Additional benefits will also be provided as prescribed in the University of Tokyo regulations.
Insurance: The appointee will be enrolled in the Mutual Aid Association of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology as well as employment insurance.
Expected date of appointment: April 1, 2019 or by negotiation.
Term of office: Five years (with no extension beyond March 31, 2024).

- A list of publications of books edited by the applicant, and/or her or his own books and articles, together with a copy of the applicant’s three most important works, if any.
- A copy of the applicant’s final degree diploma.
- An essay describing the applicant’s experience of and skills in editing journals and books in English, and/or the applicant’s research achievements (maximum 1,500 words in English).
- An essay describing how the applicant would promote humanities and area studies of the University of Tokyo through English language publications over the next five years (maximum 1,500 words in English). Please specify clearly what you intend to accomplish while you are at the IASA.
- A reference letter. The applicant must ask her or his referee to upload a PDF file of the reference on the website (http://application.ioc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ref/).
We will conduct online interviews with some applicants in late December 2018 or in early January 2019. They will be notified at an appropriate time.
