Lecture Title: How did Muhammad -- against all odds -- overcome the Jews of
Arabia?

Synopsis: The poor state of the texts included in Muhammad’s biography; The
main Jewish tribes are “the people of weapons and fortresses”; The
collapse of the old tribal system and tribal alliances due to the so-called
Constitution of Medina and the conversion of the Ansar.

Time and Venue: 18:00-19:30, 26 May 2008; 3rd floor, Institute of Oriental
Culture, Univ. of Tokyo (for direction, visit
