The exhibition Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands showcases selections from the Hossein Afshar collection, one of the most significant private collections of Persian art from the 6th to 19th century, now on long-term loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. From superb miniature paintings of the Shahnama (Book of Kings) to monumental silk carpets and Kashan luster ceramics, these rarely seen and mostly unpublished works highlight the rich artistic heritage of Iranian civilization and demonstrate profound links to Persian literature. Dr. Froom will explore these literary connections through the themes of faith and piety; love and longing; kingship and authority; feasting and fighting; and earth and nature.
The exhibition marks the culmination of the 10th anniversary of the Museum’s Art of the Islamic Worlds department and a renewed institutional commitment to collect, exhibit and interpret art from these lands. With newly expanded permanent collection galleries and a long-term loan installation of The al-Sabah collection, Kuwait, Houston has the largest display of art from Islamic lands on view in the southeastern United States in a city of tremendous vitality and diversity. Established in 1900, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is one of the largest art museums in the United States, with an encyclopedic collection of more than 65,000 works dating from antiquity to the present. Today the Museum’s 14-acre campus is being transformed with a master plan including two new buildings, a new conservation center and landscaping, expanding the Museum’s role as a cultural institution and urban oasis by 2020.
講師紹介:
Dr. Aimée Froom is curator, Art of the Islamic Worlds at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston since fall 2014. In 2015, she expanded and reinstalled the permanent galleries and the al-Sabah collection. There are now over 300 works of art from the Islamic world on permanent view at the MFAH. She is also Senior Lecturer at Rice University, where she teaches semester-long courses on Islamic Art and Architecture (2015-present). Formerly Hagop Kevorkian Associate Curator of Islamic Art, Brooklyn Museum, Dr. Froom has published articles and books and lectured widely on the topic of Islamic art. She has acted as a consultant to leading museums, including the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto; the British Museum, London; and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Paris. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at institutions including Brown University, Bard Graduate Center for the Decorative Arts, Trinity College, American University of Paris and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Dr. Froom earned her bachelor of arts degree in art history and French literature from Brown University; her master of arts in art history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst; and her PhD in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, with a thesis titled A Muraqqa’ for the Ottoman Sultan Murad III. Recent book publications include The Legacy of Persian Art (2017) and Arts of Islamic Lands: Selections from The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait (2016). She is a member of the American Association of Museum Curators, College Art Association and Historians of Islamic Art Association.
