The 38th GJS Seminar “Racial Triangulation: Japan and the Cultural Politics of Hollywood\’s White and Black Buddy Film”

Date and time: June 5, 2017 (Mon.), 5:00-6:00PM

Venue: First Meeting Room (3F), Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, The University of Tokyo

Speaker: Brian Locke (Project Assistant Professor, College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo)

Language: English

Abstract:
This talk will describe an otherwise unexamined version of Hollywood\’s ubiquitous inter-racial buddy film, a sub-genre that I call the Orientalist buddy film. Movies in this category represent US race relations in triangular form, drawing a scenario in which two American men, one white and one black, transcend racial animus for one another by joining forces against an Asian, oftentimes Japanese, foreign menace.
