【Title】 To Judge or Not to Judge: Ethnography of a District Court in Indonesia

【Abstract】
Based on anthropological fieldwork, this presentation examines daily activities in a district court in Indonesia.
In Indonesia as in Japan, people in general are not familiar with lawsuits or courts. Anthropologists are no exception, and when dealing with law, they have focused more often on customary law or decision making in small communities than on written law or lawsuits.
This presentation is an attempt to fill the gap and to indicate that the role of court is not just to judge and decide.
