Title:   “The Resisting Mayors: One Aspect of the Palestinian Resistance Movement in the Occupied Territories”
Presenter:   SUZUKI Hiroyuki (Ph.D. candidate in Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo・JSPS Research Fellow)

Abstract:   This presentation focuses on Palestinian mayors in the occupied territories in the 1970s and 1980s. Since the Israeli occupation, two municipal elections have been held in the West Bank, in 1972 and 1976. In the 1976 election, most of the mayors voted in were Palestinian nationalists who strongly persisted in opposing the Israeli occupation policy and supporting the PLO’s political attitude. This win revealed their immense popularity. They became leaders of the nonviolent resistance movement in the territories in the 1970s and 1980s. Studying their activity is very important for understanding how the Palestinian resistance movement grew under the occupation.
