第1回定例研究会 (R. チャード准教授)

The 1st Staff Seminar 2012 at IASA was held in the afternoon of 14 June 2012. Associate Professor Robert Lawrence Chard gave two lectures before nearly 20 participants. In the first, titled “The Ritual Civilization: Western Understandings of Confucianism,” he described how Confucianism was historically taken by Western observers as a key to understanding Chinese civilization, culture and society, and how that approach still influences on modern Western scholarship on China today. In the following lively discussion, Chard and the participants discussed many topics, including how Asian scholars might have affected the Western approach, how modernization in China has influenced that approach, and so on. In the latter half of the seminar, Chard, as a Managing Editor of the Institute’s English-language journal International Journal of Asian Studies (IJAS), laid out the present publishing situation of IJAS and suggested his ideas to make it one of top journals in Asian Studies, following discussions about online publishing and how to attract various scholars to submit to IJAS.
