内容提要:

Peking Gazette, a sort of Chinese pamphlets published during Ming and Qing dynasties,
contained information of the decrees, memorials and the news of the Imperial Families.
During the period of the second Opium War, the role of Peking Gazette changed from the
‘information source’ to the ‘negotiation method’ for the European. And then, one of the most
influential English language newspapers named The North-China Daily News began to publish
the translation of Peking Gazette regularly from 1871. In that way, an unofficial information
network of China had been established and the British public opinion had much more effective
in influencing Sino-British relation. This report will take the Great Famine broke out in the 1870s
as an example tying to re-examine the features of Sino-British relation during that period.
